One of those is real. The “dreamliner express” is a converted 747 or 747LCF (large cargo frieghter). built to carry the finished fuselage sections of the new 787 dreamliner. saw it take of for the first time

The LCF was never painted in dreamliner colors and is called the Dreamlifter. I’ve been inside her, watching the first 41 section unload.

While all the imagges are faked (except maybe one) it did make me wonder why passengers could not be carried under the wing frame as in image 8. maybe a case of repetitive design? I’d love to travel under the wing, hell, I’d love to have a transparent floor while I fly too, if they can do it with ships why not with planes?

Really cool selection of odd ball jets. Some that I’ve never seen.

I was thinking those wre real planes until I got to the sixth one, that kinda gave it away, well, that and most of the rest.
Comment by Zyphix — August 11, 2007 @ 8:46 pm
The last one is real as well. The Dreamliner looks amazing.
Comment by Alec — August 11, 2007 @ 9:44 pm
The dreamliner is definitely real. I see it pass by my apartment in Seattle every once in a while.

The 5th one is (soon to be) real. its a silent aircraft designed by Cambridge university
Comment by Nick — August 13, 2007 @ 11:54 am
Speaking of traveling underwing and transparent floors Lockheed produced 2 or 3 L-1011s that carried passangers in the C1 Cargo pit with no windows, a video screen showing the direction they were heading and a “Pillow Box” on the belly to protect passengers in the event of nose gear collapse.
Comment by Indyhavoc — August 14, 2007 @ 8:40 am
ok the “flying wing” ones are direct steals from Popular Science magazine’s article “The Future of Flight.” They’re concept art.

I think the reason a see through floor or a glass floor would be impossible is that it would be hard to create a glass floor that could stand up to the pressure of resulting in cracking and ultimately death… But I guess if each person had a window at their feet it would work just like having a window next to you. But an entire bottom made out of glass would be heavy and not strong enough.

Photoshop in all cases. Number 4 and the last one are representations of what the next generation of airliners may look like. Designers know they have taken the “Tube and Wing” concept about SA far as they can. To increase efficiency and passenger load (same thing, really) they have to explore new design concepts.
With computer-controlled flight modes, composite construction, and newer power sources, things are now feasible that would have been unworkable a few years ago. The F/A 117, for example could not be flown without computerized fly-by-wire controls.

While Boeing’s 747LCF in photo #9 may be real, the photo itself has been Photoshopped. Note the size of the 747LCF in relation to the aircraft, vehicles, and buildings etc on the tarmac. No current aircraft is that big, my friends.
Comment by Gavin — August 20, 2007 @ 7:13 am
umm… it looks like those tiny building and cars are just far away. its called perspective. I think a good portion of the foreground picture is cropped out. The plane is probably still a good distance in the air as well as from the background stuff.

are this really, really, really, really real airplane?????
laterzzzzzzzzzzz
Comment by Joel — September 1, 2007 @ 4:24 pm
id say half of these are photoshopped, if you look at the ones where the cockpit and engine have been reversed youll notice that the blurring from the jet exhaust is coming from where the engines should be. the extremely long plane shone i dont think would be possible due to current engineering materials, it would just be too weak without wings spread out over the plane to give it stability, the planes with the numerous amounts of engines are feasable but very impractical as the fuel costs would be astronomical. and that second to last one with the A3 on the tail, i want one

Although this type of exercise might seem strange,- BUT in reality it is imperative that fertile minds of airplane “types” continue to experiment. Who is to say that imaginary creations like some of these cannot some day be true-to-life flying machines, and not some photoshop winged vehicle.
I think these images are refreshing, exciting and inspiring.
More, please.

Yes - these images are very strange, indeed. BUT, I think it is imperative that the fertile minds of airplane “types” continue their experiments. Who is to say that some day, some of these projections might actually be modified to fly and fly well, creating a new freestyle approach to aircraft design that works.
Comment by theodore s tobias — September 12, 2007 @ 8:22 pm
dude that was TOTALLY photoshopped!

I want #6…the fuel bill would be very small, I should think, without any engines…

I love the duck design (whether it’s real or not); it calls to mind the Sea Duck from the oh-so-awesome cartoon TaleSpin!
